About the Lotus 34-Ford

The Lotus 34-Ford represented the evolution of Colin Chapman's revolutionary rear-engine Indianapolis cars. Building upon the success of the Lotus 29, the Lotus 34 demonstrated that lightweight engineering and superior chassis design could outperform the traditional front-engine roadsters that had dominated the Indianapolis 500 for decades.

Dan Gurney qualified sixth for the 1964 Indianapolis 500 in the No. 12 Lotus 34-Ford, showcasing the tremendous potential of the design despite race-ending tire failures. Within only a few seasons, the rear-engine concept pioneered by Lotus completely transformed Indianapolis racing and forever changed the direction of American open-wheel competition.
